It’s 2021. Companies across America have made incredible strides toward being inclusive of communities and it’s time to start being proactive about embracing American Muslims. This coming Ramadan is a great place to start, and we’ve got the tips and tools to help you acknowledge your American Muslim customers and employees this year.

  1. Don’t go at it alone. There are many independent efforts that your company can plug into without reinventing the wheel. The National Iftar gives companies a chance to celebrate online with American Muslims at one of the most established national Ramadan celebrations.
  2. Celebrate your employees and know their rights. With almost four million American Muslims, you definitely have some employees acknowledging the month-long holiday and it’s big celebration, Eid. This year’s Ramadan runs from mid-April through mid-May, during which time observant Muslims will fast all day while still going about their daily business. This know your rights guidance from Muslim Advocates helps provide a floor of what accommodations employers must make, but don’t stop there. Use this holiday as a chance to check-in with your Muslim employees and offer support as they work through the month.
  3. Get to know your Muslim customers. Many American corporations do little to acknowledge the month of Ramadan and your Muslim customers are noticing. If your company publicly acknowledges other holidays or community pride months, you should include Ramadan or Eid too. The Muslim Ad Network has a backgrounder to help you get started, but remember, you don’t need to commercialize the month to make an impact on your customers. Simply acknowledging the holiday is a great first step.

It’s time to get the ball rolling and organizations like Muslim Advocates are on the Open to All Advisory Council and are available to help answer your questions and help along the way. So don’t hesitate, reach out to Fatima Khan at fatimazk@muslimadvocates.org to get started.
